RULE ONE Miles Upshur is from Red Barrels' 2013 first-person survival horror video game OUTLAST. If you are not familiar with this property, I STRONGLY recommend looking to a trigger list before approaching the game(s.) Everything will be tagged accordingly, but a general gloss over triggers from the first game include: Intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Following his venture through Mount Massive Asylum, Miles sustained various injuries. His right pointer finger was severed at the second knuckle, and his left ring finger was cut off completely following in run-in with Trager. Experiences chronic middle back pain from trauma to his spine, and chronic pain in his left knee and hip from being dropped from several meters. His most notable injury is the presence of twenty-two bullet scars through his stomach, chest and abdomen: fatal injuries only prevented from his body's fusion with The Walrider (a militarised swarm of nanites that function with a collective consciousness, capable of immense physical strength, flight, and cell regeneration) as its' surrogate host. Minor repairs are passively undergone in Miles' body at all times with the aid of the nanites, but Miles' control of the swarm is complicated. While he acts as the conscious brain for his body and the nanites, their function operates strongly on extreme emotions: deathly fear, trauma and rage, states indescribably powerful to the bodily function. Instinct dictates the swarm's decision-making first, and Miles can only do so much to physically steer the Walrider to his will. Because of the presence of the nanites in his bloodstream and their functional tie to emotional regulation, emotional distress can trigger violent physical reactions within Miles' own body: nose bleeds, tinnitus, migraines, auras — and more rarely vomiting, seizures and hallucinations. It can also make his old injuries play up again, strengthening the intensity of his chronic pain.

USUAL EXPRESSION Uninviting. His resting expression is often closer to a frown — unfocused, but alert, usually owed to his tendency to build deeper on any thoughts in his head. As a result, he can come across as annoyed or even angry when his attention is called upon. One can tell he is thinking more than he's letting on, and when prompted, he is more than likely to give a bombardment of information.CLOTHING STYLE No matter the circumstances, Miles doesn't often stray far from smart casual as his common clothing style. He favours jeans, trousers, button-ups, collared shirts and work boots. His favorite addition is a light brown, waxed cotton field jacket.ASPIRATIONS If there is one thing to be said about Miles Upshur, it is that he is a highly ambitious man, whose determination often gets him in more trouble than he is prepared for. He will ultimately push the limits that most others in his position wouldn't be willing to go due to their own safety, livelihood, the legality, and other risks. Be it his demand for results, or just his plain arrogance, Miles isn't afraid to stand out, to make his presence an uncomfortable one for those who could crush him under their palm if they got the chance. The censorship in media and the monopolies behind it are the very root of the corruption and misinformation in his field — you won't find anyone quicker to challenge politically neutral or manipulative language and imagery in media than him. He knows the institutions, what they stand for, who funds them, and he is determined not to conform to the comfortable stability that comes from not rocking the boat. He is determined to use to education, his knowledge, his literary skills, and his loud presence in aid of tearing down corrupt institutions and bringing their benefactors to justice: if no one else is willing to get the penny rolling, he will do it himself, even if it kills him.FAITH Atheist.EDUCATION For his cynical and crude manner, Miles is more intelligent and well-read than he seems at a glance, and has been since he was young. His bright mind and passion for ethics shone more through in his later teen years. He completed his high school education in 1994, and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Journalism over a four-year duration in California. His paper on the democratic & human rights of refugees in the USA went on to be praised by his professor and published to the digital library in his final year of formal education, 1998.
